Overview of the Problem
Violence in the workplace is a tenacious problem resulting in injury, death and damage to an organization’s reputation and a cost of approximately $4.2 billion per year to U.S. businesses in missed days of work and legal costs. It is a problem that no business can afford to ignore and no business is immune from. While federal labor statistics demonstrate a significant reduction in workplace violence over the past two decades, it is estimated that some two million American workers are still the victims of violence each year. In an average week, one worker is killed and 25 others seriously injured by violent incidents on the job. Homicide remains the leading cause of death for women in the workplace. Of all the various types of operational risk, the risk of an active shooter or workplace violence incident is one of the most complex and potentially traumatic.
